J. R. R. Tolkien created complex, intertwined mythologies for his fantasy world of Middle Earth. His own early life was similarly complex. Tolkien moved many times and was orphaned at a young age, but he still thrived. His love of learning and the rural English countryside drove his creation of stories, drawings, and made-up languages. As a young adult, he met and married Edit Bratt, graduated from Oxford University, and went to fight in World War I, experiences that would shape the rest of his life. Working as a professor after the war, Tolkien wrote mythologies to fit with his imagined languages. He also told bedtime stories to his young children. Eventually the mythologies and stories blended to become The Hobbit. The Lord of the Rings followed as Tolkien's publisher pushed to replicate The Hobbit's success. Decades later, Tolkien's epic, detailed fantasy universe has captivated millions through movies, books, television, and more. Read about Tolkien's life and how his stories continue to enchant fans today.
